Urogenital Surgery

The most common surgical problem we see with the urogenital system is urinary calculi or stones. Calculi can form in the kidneys or the bladder and they can lodge in and obstruct the urethra (the tube emptying urine from the bladder) or the ureter (the tubes connecting the kidney to the bladder). They can be surgically removed from any of these structures, although surgical removal from the kidneys is rarely recommended. Unfortunately, surgery does not prevent recurrence of these stones. After surgery, we send the stone(s) to a lab to be analyzed. We forward these results to your primary veterinarian and consult with him or her to determine a long term plan to both prevent the recurrence of the stones and to also monitor for a recurrence of the problem.
