Pet First Aid Tips
First Aid is not a substitute for medical attention, but here are a few common sense tips. Please, however, don’t try to treat your pet’s emergency with ‘on-line’ advice.
Bite Wounds: protect yourself first. Injured pets tend to bite out of pain/fear. Wear gloves. If bleeding, apply pressure; wrap if bleeding is severe. Seek medical attention.
Burns: apply large amounts of cool, running water. Seek medical attention.
Choking: try to calm your pet first. Don’t try to put your hand in the mouth of a choking animal. Take your pet to closest
veterinarian available. If your pet loses consciousness, you can then try to remove object.
Heatstroke: mist your pet with lukewarm water and place in front of a fan while seeking medical attention.
Poisoning: call your veterinarian or the NationalAnimalPoisonControlCenter (1-888-4-ANIHELP)
Seizure: keep your pet safe; don’t try to put anything in its mouth. Most seizures last less than 1 min. Call for medical attention. |
