Endocrine Surgery
Dogs and cats can develop hormonal diseases that are the result of a benign or a malignant tumor that develops on the gland secreting that hormone. Surgical removal of the effected gland can resolve the resulting disease in some cases. For example, a benign tumor of one of the parathyroid glands can secrete a hormone that results in excessive calcium in the body. Removal of the effected gland is a simple surgical procedure that can resolve this condition. Please note that some glands can develop tumors that rarely secrete any hormone, such as the thyroid gland in dogs.
