                                       Jaw fractures

Maxillofacial fractures are not uncommon in dogs and cats. Often these fractures are due to trauma such as being hit by a car, a gunshot or fighting with other animals. It is important to stabilize the fracture, maintain proper occlusion and treat soft tissue injuries all without causing further trauma.

The presence of teeth provides unique complications in treating these fractures that are not encountered when treating fractures of other bones. Surgical techniques that may be used to stabilize a leg fracture often risk damaging tooth roots or causing dental malocclusion. Implants such as screws or pins are difficult or impossible to place without piercing a tooth root and thus killing the tooth. Additionally bending plates to maintain proper occlusion can be very difficult.

Alternatively our techniques cause less damage and allow for stabilization of jaw fractures while maintaining normal occlusion. These techniques utilize dental composites and interdental wiring techniques to safely realign the fracture without damaging teeth or occlusion. These techniques also cause less damage to the surrounding bone. In cases which composite splints may not work alone; our dentistry and surgery departments will work together to provide the necessary treatment.
