Dental trauma Dental trauma can lead to uncomplicated fractures with exposure of the sensitive dentin, complicated fractures with exposure and subsequent necrosis of the pulp or concussive damage to the pulp. With concussive damage, the tooth may appear discolored (pink, purple, gray or beige) which indicates pulp death. Although our companions rarely complain, endodontic trauma is extremely painful in the acute stage. In time the pulp becomes necrotic and infected and can lead to osteitis and draining tracts of the jaws and face. Endodontic therapy is a less invasive and much less painful alternative to extraction of these teeth while maintaining function and aesthetics. Therapy may include direct pulp capping to keep the pulp alive or root canal therapy to remove necrotic material and seal the remainder of the tooth. |

Dental trauma can also lead to loss of dental function, aesthetics and place the patient at risk for further disease. Enamel dysplasia (often called enamel hypoplasia) makes the affected tooth extremely sensitive and can lead to endodontic and periodontal infection. Restoration with either dental composite resins or a prosthodontic crown (or cap) will return normal function and aid in preventing further pathology. An often-overlooked dental injury is abrasion of the distal or caudal aspect of the canine teeth due to cage chewing. A healthy and complete dentition is very important for retrieving and apprehension trained dogs. |
